Garrett McVaugh is a teacher working with 4 and five year olds at preschool of the Arts in Madison, WI. While this is Garrett’s first year at PSA, he has worked with children ranging from 2.5 years to kindergarten age since 2004. Before coming to PSA, Garrett spent 8 years as a teacher/researcher at St. John’s Episcopal Preschool in Washington, DC, and 3 years at Northern Virginia Friends School. Garrett is a graduate of Haverford College in Haverford, PA. Garrett has been thinking about the role of documentation in early childhood for a number of years, and draws inspiration from the educators and schools in Reggio Emilia, Italy. He attended a 2010 study tour to Reggio Emilia entitled “Documentation: the action of listening,” and has presented on the topic in a number of different contexts. He is especially excited to see the different ways in which documentation can be understood through the contexts of the conference participants, as well to see that way in which documentation shapes the understanding of the conference as a whole.
